""national park experience"" to the east where millions of
people were within a day's drive. Unlike western parks
which were created on public land, Shenandoah National
Park was carved out of private land that was purchased by
the Commonwealth of Virginia and donated to the federal
government. Thousands of landowners and residents were
bought out and forced to move. These people sacrificed
their lands, homes, and communities. Their sacrifices
allow nearly 2 million people each year to experience the
natural and cultural wonders of Shenandoah National Park
in the Blue Ridge mountains.
